San Telmo is one of the older suburbs, referred to as barrios, in Buenos Aries. It is situated on the fringe of Microcentro and to the east of Puerto Madero. During the week it has a bohemian student feel to it but in the weekend the streets come alive as the antique market takes over.
Appartment Accommodation In Bueno Aries
There are very few hotel rooms in the barrio so the main form of accommodation is apartments. These can be rented for a few days but most require a 1 week minimum stay. The additional space these apartments have makes up for the lack of hotel services such as room service. One benefit is having your own kitchen as breakfasts are hard to find, unless you like cake and coffee, so being able to cook is very helpful. Prices are very good and there are many websites that offer apartments in this area. One long standing reputable company is ByT Argentina.
San Telmo Restaurants
There are many restaurants and cafes in the area. At night the streets at Chile and Defensa are buzzing as patrons move between the restaurants and bars that fill the squares there. Prices are good and the quality is excellent. Early in the evening diners order plates of cheese and or meat to nibble on as they talk and debate till late. Restaurants look empty until after 10pm when the locals finally start to sit down to eat. For a cafe bar experience with music and intellectual debate from the customers try La Posteria cnr Chile and Bolivar. A great steak meal can be had in Gran Parrilla del Plata, Cnr Chile and Peru. This family run restaurant is classy and affordable and always delivers a great meal.
Plazza Dorrego Antique Market
San Telmo is famous for its antique market and shops. The market is every Sunday and although it is meant to be in Plazza Dorrego the stalls spread down Defensa St for almost 2 kilometres. Here are antiques and collectables from almost every era. Between the stalls the antique shops have a stunning array or pieces and will offer to ship purchases anywhere in the world. This market is not one to be missed. Exploring the streets during the week you will come across a random assortment of shops and goods. The shopping streets of Florida and Lavalle a 15 minute walk to the North West, is the best bet for more high street shops and plenty of them.
What seems to make San Telmo feel such a nice area is the number of Argentinean tourists encountered. If the locals want to come and visit there must be something going for it.
